Erumeli: Ahead of the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, district police conducted an inspection of accident-prone areas along the Sabarimala routes to assess safety arrangements. The inspection was led by District Police Chief K. M. Sabuvin and covered Erumeli, Kannimala, Eruthwappuzha, Kanamala, Kalaketty and Azhuthakadavu.

At the Attivala bend on the Kanamala downhill stretch, identified as an accident-prone area, a portion of the retaining wall has collapsed, leaving stones and soil on the road. The police have written to the panchayat and the Public Works Department seeking immediate removal of the debris. Directions were also issued to install reflective boards and blinking lights at the Mathampadi bend on the Mundakkayam road to improve road safety.

The facilities at various parking grounds in Erumeli were also assessed in view of the possibility of regulating Ayyappa devotees’ vehicles during periods of heavy pilgrim traffic at Sabarimala. Circle Inspectors in charge of other important pilgrim transit points in the district, including Ettumanoor, Thirunakkara, Vaikom and Kadapattur, were instructed to inspect the facilities available there. Parallel routes were also examined as part of the preparations.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rijo P. Joseph, Erumeli Circle Inspector M. R. Suresh and Sub-Inspector Shanthi K. Babu also participated in the inspection.
