Historical Background (©Research)
In May 1950, the Sabarimala Temple was attacked by radical religious groups, identified by a 1951 CBI report (arson and fire) as extremist Christian factions, who set the temple on fire and destroyed the first Panchaloha idol of Ayyappa with an axe. This act of vandalism deeply impacted devotees
Under the guidance of Shri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the then-ruler of Travancore, the temple was restored. A second Panchaloha idol, crafted in the premises of Sree Mahadeva Temple at Chengannur under the supervision of the Thantri and the Devaswom Board
The Idol was consecrated by Thantri Kandaru Sankararu of Thazhaman Illam, assisted by Melshanthi Sree Vatakkillatt Eswaran Namboodiri, on 18th May 1951 (4th Edavam 1126, Malayalam calendar) at 7:45 A.M. on the auspicious Atham (Hastha Nakshatra) day. This event, observed annually since 1951 as the Pratishta Dinam.
