Pilgrims Get Green Signal for Traditional Forest Trek
The Forest Department will open the traditional forest route from Sathram and Pullumedu to Sannidhanam on Monday (November 17), coinciding with the start of the Mandalam–Makaravilakku pilgrimage season.
Azhutha Range Officer D. Benny said pilgrims from Sathram can access the forest path from 7 a.m., with entry permitted only between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. “A department team will inspect the path every day before allowing devotees to proceed,” he added.
Facilities Along the Route
Drinking water has been arranged at Seethakkulam, Zero Point, Pullumedu Tavalam, Kazhuthakkuhi, and Pandithavalam. A medical team is stationed at Pullumedu, while an ambulance will remain on standby at Seethakkulam.
The department will ensure safe passage for all pilgrims using the Sathram route. Officials also highlighted the ‘Ayyan’ mobile app, developed by the Periyar Tiger Reserve West Division, which provides real-time assistance and support to pilgrims trekking through the forest.
Senior Officials Review Arrangements
On Sunday (November 16), Idukki District Collector Dineshan Cheruvatt and Additional District Magistrate Shyju P. Jacob conducted an inspection of the traditional forest route and reviewed the preparations. The Collector reaffirmed that all departments had completed the necessary arrangements to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage.
He also cautioned that some inter-State pilgrims had attempted to trek from Pullumedu to Sannidhanam at night after witnessing the Makara Jyothi. “Night trekking on the traditional forest route is strictly prohibited,” he said.
