High Court Directs State to Consider Special Law to Protect Temple Properties

Kochi: In view of incidents of illegal possession of temple properties, the High Court asked the state government to consider bringing in a law with penal provisions to protect Devaswom properties and valuable articles.

The court was hearing arguments on the bail applications of the accused in a gold theft case. The court asked the government why it was not possible to frame a special law to protect Devaswom properties. The state government should think about this. The existing Devaswom Manual alone is not sufficient. In many temples, properties are accumulating and are being misused. The state has a duty to protect Devaswom properties, the court observed.
