‘Malikappuramamma’s tears caused Kerala floods’: Court seeks report on M Swaraj’s controversial speech
Kollam: The Judicial First-Class Magistrate Court in Kollam has sought a report on a controversial speech made by former MLA and CPM leader M Swaraj. The court’s action follows a complaint alleging that Swaraj made baseless and provocative remarks regarding the entry of women into the Sabarimala temple.
The complaint was filed by Youth Congress state vice president Vishnu Sunil, who submitted a video recording of the speech as evidence. Initially, Vishnu Sunil approached the Kollam West Police and later the City Police Commissioner, but alleged that no action was taken. Following this, he decided to approach the court.
In the controversial speech, Swaraj said that it was the tears of Maalikapurathamma that caused the massive floods in Kerala in 2018. The CPM leader also said that this led to the end of Lord Ayyappa’s celibacy. The speech was controversial during that time and is even believed to have had a big effect on Swaraj's surprise defeat in the 2021 assembly elections
