Sadya Served to Minister Before Offering to Deity: Atonement Rites Begin at Aranmula, Ritual Feast on Feb 5
Aranmula: Atonement rituals have begun at Aranmula Sree Parthasarathy Temple after a feast (sadya) was served to Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan and his team before it was first offered to the deity, violating temple custom. A prayer seeking forgiveness was held on 28.01.2026, and a ritual sadya will be conducted on February 5.
The action follows a letter from the temple’s Thantri to the Devaswom Board demanding corrective measures. Palliyoda Seva Sangham members, temple advisory committee members, and Devaswom officials will make ritual offerings before the deity. A sadya will be prepared using 11 units of rice, along with a separate naivedyam made with one unit of rice and four curries.
Traditionally, the Ashtami Rohini sadya — marking the deity’s birthday — is served only after the noon Pooja and offering to the deity. This time, citing urgency, the minister arrived early, inaugurated the event, and the sadya was served and eaten before the offering.
The Thantri termed it a serious ritual violation and ordered remedial rites, an oath against repeat lapses, and re-performance of the ceremonies. Devotees have criticized organizers for negligence.
