Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Assembly was adjourned after intense protests by the Opposition, which accused the government of stalling the investigation into the Sabarimala gold theft case. As tensions rose, UDF MLAs tried to reach the Speaker’s dais, prompting Speaker AN Shamseer to leave his chair and exit the House. Proceedings were then adjourned. UDF MLA Anwar Sadath made an attempt to climb onto the dais, with several other MLAs moving forward, but Watch and Ward personnel stepped in and blocked them.
The Opposition declared it would not cooperate with the Assembly’s functioning, claiming the probe into the Sabarimala gold theft case was being deliberately weakened. Opposition Leader VD Satheesan alleged that interference from the Chief Minister’s Office had brought the investigation to a standstill.
“All the accused are securing bail. Unnikrishnan Potti too will be out soon. The SIT investigation has been influenced by pressure from the Chief Minister’s Office. We will boycott cooperation with Assembly proceedings and strengthen our protests both inside and outside the House,” Satheesan said.
The Speaker warned the opposition to remove their banner in the House or it would be taken away.
Minister M. B. Rajesh criticised the Opposition’s conduct and questioned the need for such protests.
