VN Vasavan Responds to Devaswom Board’s Decision on Women’s Entry Row

 

Keralam: Devaswom Minister V. N. Vasavan said that the decision regarding women’s entry into Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple was taken independently by the Travancore Devaswom Board. He clarified that the decision was not directed by the government. The minister also stated that the government’s position on the issue would be decided in a Cabinet meeting. He added that the Devaswom Board has the authority to take independent decisions.

He said that protecting the interests of devotees is the responsibility of the Board, and it has taken its decision accordingly. The Cabinet will meet and take a final decision, and the government’s stand will be informed when the case is considered, he clarified.

Meanwhile, Travancore Devaswom Board President K. Jayakumar said that traditional customs would be protected in the matter of women’s entry at Sabarimala and that the Board does not accept the Supreme Court of India verdict. He told the media that the Board would inform the Supreme Court of its position and that concerned officials have been instructed to notify the court before March 14. An affidavit will be submitted. He stated that the Devaswom Board’s decision is solely aimed at protecting temple traditions.
