Devaswom Board Seeks Faster Implementation of Sabarimala Master Plan; Pampa Safety Bridge, Pilgrim Facilities in Focus
Thiruvananthapuram: The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has called for faster implementation of the construction projects proposed under the Sabarimala Master Plan.
One of the Board’s key demands is the construction of a safety bridge at Pampa and the development of basic infrastructure facilities at Nilakkal. The Board also pointed out at the High-Power Committee meeting that there has been little progress on the proposed Sabarimala ropeway project.
The decision to construct a safety bridge at Pampa was taken following the devastating floods of 2018. The safety bridge is included in the Pampa layout plan approved on January 9, 2025. During the recent heavy rains, the existing bridge was submerged, creating difficulties for pilgrims. The Board reportedly pointed out that the situation had even reached a stage where authorities had to advise devotees against travelling to Sabarimala.
There has also been little progress on plans to improve basic facilities for pilgrims at Nilakkal. The Board may have to take steps on its own this year to ensure that the required facilities are in place. The plan is aimed at preventing large groups of pilgrims arriving at Nilakkal from moving towards Sannidhanam at the same time.
The Board expressed concern over delays in the implementation of the Master Plan projects.
After the High-Power Committee meeting on Monday, the Devaswom Board held a meeting in the afternoon to discuss the recommendations. The Board is now planning to provide safer and better resting facilities for pilgrims at Nilakkal. Toilet facilities will be expanded, while arrangements for food and drinking water will also be Improved.
The Board also plans to limit the time pilgrims stay at Sannidhanam after darshan to manage the crowd and ensure smooth movement.
