New Theerthakulam Planned at Sabarimala; Site Finalised by Vastu Expert
Sabarimala: The location for the proposed Theerthakulam (sacred temple pond) at Sabarimala has been finalised in accordance with traditional Vastu principles. The site was identified by renowned Vastu Vidya expert Kanippayyur Krishnan Namboothiripad.
The site-selection process was attended by Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) President K. Jayakumar, TDB Chief Engineer Ranjith K. Sekhar, and TDB member and Aranmula Vastu Vidya Gurukulam teacher A. V. Sivan.
The proposal has its origins in the 2014 Devaprasnam, which reportedly permitted the excavation of a new temple pond but recommended that it should not be named Bhasmakulam. Following this recommendation, the TDB decided to name the proposed pond Theerthakulam.
Historically, the original Bhasmakulam was located on the north-western side of the temple. It was later closed for reasons that remain unclear and was eventually filled in during the expansion of the Sannidhanam area to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims. A new Bhasmakulam was subsequently constructed at its present location.
The 2018 Devaprasnam reportedly indicated that Lord Ayyappa wished for the original Bhasmakulam to be restored at its original location.
The proposed Theerthakulam is not being developed at the original site of the Bhasmakulam and is not intended to replace it. Instead, it is planned as a new facility to improve pilgrim amenities, with its location determined in accordance with the Vastu principles of the present temple structure while respecting Sabarimala’s traditional architectural and spiritual significance.
