Ernakulam: The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has decided to introduce strict regulations and standards for pilgrim transit centres(Edathavalam's) established for Sabarimala pilgrims ahead of the upcoming Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season.
Devaswom Board President K. Jayakumar announced that locations lacking adequate basic infrastructure would not be recognised as official pilgrim transit centres (Edathavalam) for pilgrims.
He emphasised that the Board would no longer permit facilities to operate as pilgrim transit centres merely by displaying a signboard without providing essential amenities. All designated transit centres must ensure the availability of basic facilities, including safe drinking water, proper resting areas, and other necessary arrangements for devotees.
The Board has already identified approximately 25 to 30 major transit locations in preparation for the upcoming Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. These centres will be expected to meet the prescribed standards to ensure the comfort and convenience of pilgrims travelling to Sabarimala.
Jayakumar made the announcement while addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Navaratri celebrations at the Sree Dharma Sastha Temple in Perumbavoor, Ernakulam.
The decision aims to improve facilities at pilgrim transit centres and ensure that devotees undertaking the Sabarimala pilgrimage have access to essential amenities throughout their journey.
