Pilgrim Facilities, Eco-Shops and Drone Surveillance Planned Along Sabarimala Pullumedu Route

Idukki: Preparations are being stepped up in the district ahead of the upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season, with repair works beginning on roads under the National Highways Authority.

At a review meeting on pilgrimage preparations, District Collector Dr Dinesan Cheruvat directed officials to complete road works, including the installation of signboards, before the start of the Mandala season.

The Forest Department and local bodies have been asked to ensure adequate toilet facilities at Valadi, Sathram, Pullumedu, Mukkuzhi and Boys Ground.

A health screening facility will be set up at Valadi to examine pilgrims before allowing them to proceed through the Sathram route. Pilgrims with heart ailments and other health issues will be advised to avoid the route. Announcements in multiple languages will also be made to create awareness. Necessary facilities will be provided for Health Department personnel deployed at Valadi.

The Forest Department will open three additional service centres (eco-shops) between Sathram and Pullumedu this season. The centres at Zero Point, Pullumedu and Kazhuthakkuzhi will provide drinking water, kanji and light refreshments to pilgrims.

Security and surveillance will also be strengthened along the route. An additional watchtower will be constructed between Pullumedu and Sannidhanam. Apart from a six-member Rapid Response Team, two eco-guards will be deployed at every 500 metres along the stretch. Daytime drone surveillance will also be carried out.

Six Motor Vehicles Department teams will conduct round-the-clock patrols, while workshop assistance will be arranged for vehicles that break down. The Kerala Water Authority will provide drinking water at 15 locations between Upputhara and Kozhikkanam.

An Excise check-post will be set up at Kumily to prevent the transportation and use of intoxicants. Control rooms headed by tahsildars will be opened at Anjumala, Kumily, Periyar and the Peermade Taluk Office. The meeting also recommended deploying an additional Fire and Rescue Services unit at Upputhara.

ADM Mini K. John, RDO S. Sreejith and heads of various departments attended the meeting.
