Redevelopment of Chengannur Railway Station to Begin in December 2025: MP Kodikunnil Suresh

Chengannur: The redevelopment of the Chengannur railway station is set to commence in December 2025, according to Member of Parliament Kodikunnil Suresh.

In a statement released following a recent high-level meeting with railway officials, local representatives, and various organizations , Mr. Suresh announced that the station would be upgraded in two phases under the Union Ministry of Railways' Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

The first phase of the project, valued at ₹98.46 crore, will involve comprehensive infrastructure enhancements. According to Mr. Suresh, tenders for the construction works are scheduled to be invited next month.

Key developments in the initial phase will include the renovation of the terminal building and parking area. Additionally, the plan encompasses the construction of a three-storey pilgrim centre, new railway staff quarters, a power substation, a 300-KLD sewage treatment plant, administrative offices, lifts, and escalators. A 12-metre-wide air concourse will also be developed to improve passenger movement.

The second phase will focus on expanding the station’s commercial infrastructure. It includes the construction of a commercial complex, a skywalk connecting the station to the private bus stand, and a multi-level car parking facility.

Upon completion of both phases, the total project cost is expected to exceed ₹200 crore, Mr. Suresh added.

Chengannur, often referred to as the gateway to Sabarimala, plays a crucial role in facilitating travel for lakhs of Ayyappa devotees during the pilgrimage season. The station’s redevelopment is expected to significantly improve the pilgrimage experience and regional connectivity.
