Sabarimala Pilgrim Attacked Over Tea Price Dispute in Erumeli
Erumeli, Kerala – A Sabarimala pilgrim, U.T. Sumesh from Upputhara, Tirurangadi, Malappuram, was assaulted by temporary vendors at a tea stall near The Dharmasastha Temple in Erumeli on May 16, 2025. The incident occurred after Sumesh questioned the high price charged for a cup of tea at a stall near the temple. CCTV footage from the temple premises shows a group of vendors approaching Sumesh, with one attacking him.
Sumesh filed a complaint with the Erumeli police before returning home via Pandalam. The police requested a detailed statement, but Sumesh has been unable to return due to work commitments. He plans to submit a written statement, and the police have stated that a case will be registered against the vendors once it is received. Following the incident, local organizations intervened, leading to the temporary closure of the stall.
The incident has raised concerns about pilgrim safety and vendor practices during the Sabarimala season. Authorities are expected to take further steps to address the issue.
