Travancore Devaswom Board Introduces Sabarimala Vision Plan, Pilgrim-Friendly Crowd Control Measures Ahead of Season
Thiruvananthapuram — In preparation for the upcoming Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season scheduled from November to January, the Travancore Devaswom Board has initiated a comprehensive strategy aimed at making the Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple pilgrimage safer, greener and more pilgrim-friendly.
At a high-level coordination meeting held at the board’s headquarters on Wednesday, officials from multiple government departments and agencies came together to discuss the phased implementation of the ambitious “Sabarimala Vision Plan.” The project recently received approval from the Kerala High Court, clearing the way for its rollout during the forthcoming pilgrimage season.
Green Sabarimala Initiative Takes Centre Stage
One of the major highlights of the meeting was the decision to launch the “Green Sabarimala” project in collaboration with the forest department. The eco-focused initiative aims to enhance the environmental sustainability of the pilgrimage centre by planting suitable tree species across Devaswom Board-owned land in Sabarimala and Pamba.
Officials stated that the afforestation drive would begin before the arrival of the monsoon and continue over a two-year period. Importantly, plantation activities will be carried out only in unused spaces to ensure that crowd movement, pilgrim safety and operational activities remain unaffected.
Modern Crowd Management Measures Planned
To improve crowd control during the peak pilgrimage period, authorities also proposed replacing the current barricade-and-rope restriction system with more pilgrim-friendly arrangements. The Devaswom Board will procure and provide the upgraded crowd management infrastructure for police deployment at key locations.
The move is expected to enhance both safety and convenience for the millions of devotees who visit Sabarimala annually during the Mandala-Makaravilakku season.
Improved Sanitation and Communication Systems
The Vision Plan further includes the introduction of revised communication and sanitation protocols aimed at improving coordination among departments and maintaining hygiene standards throughout the pilgrimage season.
Officials emphasised the need for seamless inter-departmental cooperation to handle the massive influx of pilgrims efficiently while ensuring environmental protection and public health standards.
Multi-Department Coordination
The meeting was chaired by K Jayakumar and attended by board members K Raju and P D Santhosh Kumar. Also present was S Sreejith along with senior officials representing several departments.
Representatives from police, fire and rescue services, food safety, [KSEB], water authority, pollution control board, [KSRTC], Suchitwa Mission and the electrical inspectorate participated in detailed discussions regarding the infrastructural and operational changes needed for effective implementation of the plan.
With preparations already underway, authorities hope the new initiatives will significantly improve the overall pilgrimage experience while preserving the ecological sensitivity of the Sabarimala region.
