Pathanamthitta Faces Very Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Over Next 3 Hours; District Records 533% Excess Rainfall
Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Pathanamthitta district over the next three hours. According to the latest radar imagery, strong winds of up to 50 kmph are also likely.
The IMD said that Pathanamthitta has received 533% excess rainfall over the past three days—more than five times the normal rainfall for the period. Heavy rain is expected to continue in the coming hours.
In view of the severe weather conditions, pilgrims have been advised to avoid travelling to Sabarimala until conditions improve. Authorities are restricting pilgrim movement as a precaution due to the continued risk of heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides.
Since this morning, continuous announcements have been made at Sannidhanam urging devotees to leave the hill shrine immediately after completing their darshan and begin their return journey without delay. KSRTC buses are available for the return journey, and pilgrims have been requested to make use of the bus services instead of remaining at Sannidhanam.

Traffic disruptions: Waterlogging and poor visibility may affect major roads, leading to traffic congestion. People are advised to avoid all non-essential travel.
Flood risk: Water levels may rise rapidly in low-lying areas and along riverbanks, increasing the risk of flooding.
Strong winds: Trees may be uprooted, power supply may be disrupted, and houses could sustain damage due to gusty winds.
Landslide threat: Residents in hilly areas should remain alert, as there is a risk of landslides and mudslides, and should move to safer locations if advised.
Other precautions: Livestock should be shifted to safe shelters, and the public is urged to strictly follow instructions issued by the district administration, police, disaster management authorities, and the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB).
