KSRTC Fare Reduction for Sabarimala Pilgrims Under Consideration: Kerala MP
Chengannur: Kodikunnil Suresh MP has called for improved transport and healthcare facilities for Sabarimala pilgrims during a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan at Pampa ahead of the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, according to media reports.
One of the major demands was a reduction in the special fares charged by KSRTC for its Nilakkal–Pampa chain services. The MP raised the issue with Transport Minister C.P. John, requesting a fare reduction to ease the financial burden on pilgrims. The minister reportedly assured that the proposal would be considered and directed the KSRTC Managing Director to examine the matter urgently.
The meeting also reportedly decided to provide temporary facilities at the Chengannur KSRTC bus stand, where the existing station building has been demolished as part of construction work. A temporary German-style tent will be installed to provide shelter and convenience for pilgrims and other passengers during the pilgrimage season.
Another proposal was to establish a railway reservation counter at Sabarimala Sannidhanam, allowing pilgrims to book train tickets and plan their return journeys more conveniently. Travancore Devaswom Board President K. Jayakumar reportedly assured that two rooms would be provided free of cost to the Railways for operating the proposed counter during the pilgrimage season.
The MP also requested the early shifting of Chengannur District Hospital, currently functioning temporarily in a school building, to its newly completed block. Following the request, the Chief Minister reportedly directed Health Minister K. Muraleedharan to take the necessary steps to relocate the hospital.
Kodikunnil Suresh said the proposals were aimed at improving travel convenience, reducing transport expenses and ensuring better healthcare facilities for both Sabarimala pilgrims and the general public. According to reports, the ministers and officials concerned assured positive action on the issues raised.
