Railways Considering Additional Special Trains for Sabarimala Pilgrims: Suresh Gopi
Union Minister Suresh Gopi visited Kottayam Railway Station on Saturday (October 17, 2026) to review the arrangements being made for the upcoming Sabarimala Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. The inspection was conducted in anticipation of an increase in the number of pilgrims travelling by train this year.
Speaking to the media, Suresh Gopi said the visit was carried out on the instructions of the Union Railway Minister to assess railway infrastructure and ensure adequate facilities for pilgrims. He stated that the Railways had already initiated improvement works at various stations and that inspections would continue at other locations.
The Minister also said that the Railways was considering operating additional special trains to manage the expected passenger rush during the pilgrimage season. Facilities at major railway stations, including Chengannur, would be strengthened to provide better services and convenience for Sabarimala pilgrims.
Referring to the proposed Angamaly-Sabarimala railway project, Suresh Gopi said efforts would be made to develop suitable railway routes to improve connectivity for devotees travelling to the hill shrine.
He also expressed confidence that Kerala would receive an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), while making remarks about opposition to the proposed project in the State.
