Restrictions Likely on Sabarimala Ropeway Project, Forest Department Sets Conditions

Pathanamthitta: The proposed ropeway project to Sabarimala may face significant restrictions as per emerging reports. The Kerala Forest Department is likely to permit the ropeway service only for transporting essential goods and materials to the Sannidhanam, the sacred shrine at the hilltop. Transporting pilgrims or the general public will reportedly be allowed only in emergency situations.

According to sources, the forest authorities have clearly indicated that the ropeway will not serve as a passenger service under normal circumstances. This decision comes in light of environmental concerns and the need to minimize human impact on the ecologically sensitive Sabarimala region, which lies within the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

If the ropeway becomes operational, the forest department may also revoke permission for the existing tractor service that currently transports goods along the forest paths to the shrine. This could significantly alter the logistics of material movement to the temple complex.

The proposed ropeway is designed to operate from Pampa Hilltop (near the main entry point for pilgrims) to Sabarimala Sannidhanam, with its endpoint planned near the police barracks. The Travancore Devaswom Board, which manages the temple's affairs, has submitted a formal request for approval to the forest department.

A final decision is expected to be taken in the upcoming meeting of the forest and temple authorities, where the application will be considered in detail.
