Thrissur Pooram; Religious Symbol's Ban and Key Arrangements

The Thrissur Pooram, scheduled for May 6, 2025, at the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur, Kerala, is a vibrant Hindu festival known for its cultural grandeur, involving caparisoned elephants, traditional music, and spectacular fireworks. However, this year’s event has stirred debate due to stringent restrictions on religious, caste, and political symbols, alongside extensive logistical arrangements to ensure safety and order.

Thrissur Pooram, one of Kerala's grandest festivals, will see the deployment of approximately 4,000 police personnel to ensure its smooth conduct, announced Minister V.N. Vasavan. Speaking to the media after a review meeting, Ministers V.N. Vasavan, K. Rajan, and R. Bindu outlined the extensive preparations made by the government and temple authorities (Devaswoms) to make the festival a success. Multiple meetings were held to ensure the event is conducted flawlessly, and previous decisions have proven effective, the minister added.

To maintain the sanctity of the festival, The display of political party symbols or religious/caste symbols will be strictly prohibited within the Pooram premises, with strict enforcement in place. Experienced police officers will be stationed across the festival grounds, and the influx of narcotic substances will be rigorously controlled. Additional services by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will be provided, and trains will stop at Thrissur to facilitate travel. Minister Vasavan also stated that National Highway construction work will be paused on Pooram day to avoid disruptions.

Minister K. Rajan emphasized that only ambulances with a certificate from the District Medical Officer (DMO) will be permitted to enter the Pooram area during the festival. Unauthorized ambulances will not be allowed, ensuring safety and order.

This year, a larger crowd is expected compared to the previous year. Unlike past practices, no barricades will be used to restrict crowds during the nighttime Pooram events, allowing people to enjoy the iconic fireworks display from Swaraj Round with greater ease. Arrangements have been made to accommodate 18,000 People for the fireworks, with enhanced facilities, Minister Rajan elaborated.

Minister R. Bindu assured that the arrangements will ensure the lakhs of Pooram enthusiasts can enjoy the festival and return home safely. She emphasized that there will be no scope for disputes this time. While Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is engaged with the "Nava Kerala" programs and his attendance is uncertain, Ministers Vasavan, Rajan, and Bindu will be present in Thrissur throughout the event.
The sample fireworks may be display today, with the main Thrissur Pooram set to take place on May 6, an event eagerly awaited by Malayalis worldwide.
