Sabarimala Pooja Materials Scam: Controversy Over Probe Sabotage Claims

Thiruvananthapuram — A controversy has emerged over an alleged move to transfer the Devaswom Vigilance Superintendent of Police (SP) who exposed corruption in the procurement of pooja materials at Sabarimala. Reports suggest that leaders within the Devaswom Board, cutting across ruling and opposition-backed groups, are united in seeking the officer’s removal.

Reacting to the development, Devaswom Minister K. Muralidharan stated that no individual involved in misappropriating temple assets would be protected. The move reportedly targets Vigilance SP V. Sunilkumar, whose recent vigilance report exposed irregularities in the purchase of pooja materials. Under existing procedures, the SP is appointed by the Home Department based on the recommendation of the Devaswom Board.

Sunilkumar had earlier prepared the investigation report related to the alleged Sabarimala gold scam. Following that report, a special investigation team has been continuing its probe, with former presidents of the Travancore Devaswom Board among those named as accused.

The latest vigilance findings have also been submitted before the High Court. After reviewing the report, the court directed authorities to provide records covering the last ten years regarding the procurement of pooja materials. The court also ordered an examination into whether the same individuals have continued in multiple positions at Sabarimala for extended periods.

The Devaswom Vigilance wing has previously uncovered several alleged irregularities connected to Sabarimala administration, including fraud in the distribution of leftover ghee offerings and financial misappropriation involving temporary staff employed during the pilgrimage season.
